Martin Wolf – busting the scare tactics

UK Membership of the European Union is likened to being akin to shovelling crisp fifty pound notes into the furnace in Brussels every week.

I think you will spend 38 seconds reading this post

A piece by Martin Wolf in the Irish Times recently came to my attention – not least because it takes ten very common perceptions being quoted about leaving the EU, and debunks them.Even living in a Mongolian Yurt (the wifi is Terelj is marvellous!) the chances are that people would still have heard the classic claims of UK Membership of the European Union being akin to shovelling crisp fifty pound notes into the furnace in Brussels every week. It is a claim that has not stood up to scrutiny and has even had to be removed from literature as it just isn’t true (the oft-bandied figure is expressed in two ways – GBP 55 million day or GBP 350 million per week). Another case of lies, damn lies, and statistics…
